Evening in May at Aiken arts event promotes cultural series
At a rainy Arts Council gathering in Aiken last night a crowd enjoyed wine and hors d oeuvres and big band music while viewing Boyd Saunders works. Guest speaker David C Sennema, head of the State Museum, outlined plans for a new home in the old Columbia Mill and highlighted museum progress and exhibits. He praised Irene Rudnick and the Friends of the State Museum as well as local museums led by Joyce Ross. Officers for the coming year were elected including Peter Bisshop as president and Molly Gray as VP, with several new board members named.

USC Aiken to hold Thursday commencement ceremonies
USC Aiken will conduct commencement Thursday at 7 30 p m with about 180 graduates. keynote speaker Gerald F Curtin Jr of Du Pont petrochemicals will receive an honorary Doctor of Science. U S District Chief Judge Charles E Simons Jr will receive an honorary Doctor of Laws. Simons has held multiple legal and civic roles and led various organizations in South Carolina and Aiken community service.

Banksia Building Committee Seeks Study Funds
The Aiken County Library Banksia Committee seeks 2500 for a professional study to guide expansions on the first floor and possible second floor operations. County administrator Scott Barnes says the study could help secure future state or federal grants and plans to apply by May 21. The panel will present its report on May 16 to council.
