Councilman unhappy over sales tax funding priorities
Aiken County Councilman Chuck Smith urged revisiting funding priorities for the county share of the Capital Project Sales Tax during a Tuesday meeting at the County Government Center. He criticized amendments redistributing 2.5 million away from gateway corridor improvements, argued Whiskey Road allocations were too high, and lamented missing votes limiting his input. The issue proceeds to a May 3 meeting of the Sales Tax Commission to draft the November ballot question.

Aiken Receives 300000 For Brownfield Studies
The Environmental Protection Agency awarded the City of Aiken 300000 for brownfield studies in downtown and Northside. Two thirds funds assess hazardous contamination at former industrial sites, the rest 100000 supports petroleum studies at similar locations. Money targets properties not owned by the city, including areas near the Farmer's Market, a former Oil Facility, old government building, hospital, downtown parcels on Newberry Street, and former car repair sites. Plans include priority list, cleanup steps, and community outreach. Contamination may involve asbestos and lead. EPA distributed funds to 144 municipalities, seven in South Carolina, with Southeast cities receiving substantial shares.
