Lobster Races Shine At 19th Miller Site Event

Chuck Martin, wearing a red lobster hat, watched thousands of fans in downtown Aiken enjoy the 19th Annual Miller Site Lobster Race under clear skies after rain stayed north. Organizers report 2002 races were rained out for safety, but this year crowds seemed pleased as races progressed about three hours in.

Inaugural Heritage Cycling Series Aiken Pace

Cyclists forming a 125 rider A pack rolled through downtown Aiken Friday night as the first South Carolina Heritage Cycling Series event surged along a one mile loop from Laurens Street to Park Avenue Hayne Avenue Lancaster Street and back. The race featured speeds up to 40 mph while the field completed 50 laps in a blur of motion before a Page 7A continuation.

Graham to debate on national TV after USC debate

Sen Lindsey Graham will appear on This Week with George Stephanopoulos to offer a Republican response to Democratic presidential candidates after their Saturday debate at the University of South Carolina. The Columbia event will be broadcast locally on WJBF TV at 12:30 pm with a live feed for non-attendees.

Busbee Elementary Student Drowns in Unfinished Pond

Johnathan Alexander Pynes, four, son of Eddie and Jennifer Pynes, died after an unfinished pond at a farm partially filled. Coroner Sue Townsend said the child did not know how to swim and his mother found him in the pond. Autopsy planned. accidental drowning expected. Funeral arrangements by Blizzard Funeral Home.

President Bush to speak at USC graduation in May

President George W. Bush will deliver the spring commencement address at the University of South Carolina on May 9 at 3 PM in the Carolina Center. The occasion marks the second time in a week the university has drawn national political attention as Democratic candidates hold a debate there and the campus prepares for about 1,200 graduates across multiple schools.
