The MOX facility at Savannah River Site will hire about 520 workers including 200 from Duke Cogema Stone & Webster and 320 subcontractors to build a 70 million plant converting weapons grade plutonium for commercial reactors. The Aiken Community Band kicked off the Hopelands Summer Concert Series 2006 with a light refreshing program. More than 700 locals attended as fine weather and mild temperatures set a perfect scene. Aiken High and South Aiken High bus offices report nine vacancies in Area 1 with no replacements ready. Transportation supervisor Maria McClure is driving a route herself daily through year end while staff fill in. She began as a bus driver in 1986 and rose to supervisor before district post two years ago.
