Hollywood screen writers and studio heads met for 17 hours until after the writers contract expired at 12 01 a m without a new deal but with promises to resume talks. A strike was averted temporarily as negotiations paused with a news blackout and both sides set to return to the bargaining table later Wednesday.
The Aiken Standard corrects Tuesday figures stating countywide sales tax rose to 6 percent. The notice specifies the tax amount as of Tuesday and fixes prior reporting errors.

The plan could push all ballot projects to be paved at once, potentially ending lawsuits over allocations. Council approves the idea after a closed session as the 1 percent local option tax takes effect, raising the county tax to 6 percent.
The 2000 2001 academic year at Aiken High sees multiple student deaths from accidents and crime. Jessica Carpenter was found murdered just before school started, and three South Aiken High students Norris Spann Jr Nate Kennedy and John Peacock died in separate car crashes. Students recall grief, moments of silence and memory boards as the school community copes.
Aiken Standard survey shows regular unleaded near 1.50 a gallon, averaging 1.52 with mid-grade 1.62 and premium 1.72. Officials warn prices could exceed 2.00 by summer’s end. The paper will continue weekly during driving season.
Aiken County Board of Education warned that without reversal of state funding cuts they may seek a 47 mill tax increase to fund raises for teachers, district operations, and the alternative school. The board approved moving toward a 130.7 million budget to provide a 5 percent raise and restore funding for the alternative school and technology initiative.
Aiken County Council considers revisiting a plan to raise tax millage to fund volunteer fire departments. Kathy Rawls urged the council Tuesday night to reopen the debate after previous discussions were deferred due to timing with the Fiscal 2002 budget. See FIRE, Page 8A.
