The Hornets suffer a setback that cools their playoff ambitions as the season storyline narrows. Key players struggle with accuracy while rival teams widen the gap, dimming postseason chances for the squad.
AP reports Upstate area hit by late night winds and heavy rain that toppled trees and damaged property in Clover Gaffney Blacksburg and Fort Mill. Golf ball sized hail and power outages occurred though no injuries or confirmed tornado sightings were reported. Weather officials issued warnings but no sighting confirmed.
Four of six inmates from last month s Broad River Correctional Institution uprising in Columbia face new assault and battery with intent to kill charges from the April 17 incident. Willie Gray Theodore Harrison Kevin Smith and Sheldon Crawford also face hostage taking and aggravated assault and battery. Democratic caucus scheduled for March 5 in South Carolina to select national convention delegates, three days after the Republican presidential primary.

Two men linked as witnesses in the Oklahoma City bombing were arrested in Carthage Missouri after a highway patrol sighting of a white Thunderbird. Gary Allen Land and Robert Jacks were taken into custody on material witness warrants.
An Aiken man indicted for burglary robbery and kidnapping was released on a $50,000 personal recognizance bond after a speedy trial deadline passed. The victim learned of the release and said law enforcement had not informed her. Glenn Overton, 27, remains held for court action. Snell must appear May 8 and avoid contact with the victim while residing in Aiken County.
DOE officials announce 300 fulltime Savannah River Site workers will be laid off starting today. An additional 1,030 subcontractors and temporary workers will be cut by month’s end. DOE bumper figures show 4,203 voluntary and involuntary separations to date, with more layoffs anticipated as FY1997 payroll needs exceed savings.
Taylor says 300 workers will report to the Employment Resources Center on Richland Avenue for 60 days of job placement assistance and explanations of education and medical benefits. All remain on SRS payroll until July 1, after which funds cover layoff and separation benefits. Voluntary separation offers $20,000 for pre September 27, 1991 hires and $7,500 for later hires. Early retirement requires three years added to age and service.
An Amtrak Silver Star train struck a tractor trailer stuck on a rural railroad crossing near Sycamore in the early morning darkness. About five people were taken to hospitals with non life threatening injuries. The wreck occurred at about 2:45 am.
At the Savannah River Site Resource Center a quiet day belies looming layoffs. About 2,200 workers took voluntary separations or early retirement, leaving roughly 2,000 awaiting termination notices. The center offers resume help, computer rooms, and staff to match workers with new jobs, with 700 visitors just last Thursday and Friday. Keith Partridge, a Bec tal employee, praised the center as extremely helpful.
