The National Endowment for the Humanities awards USC Aiken a 170000 grant to fund Humanities Focus, a 12 hour interdisciplinary program adding three new faculty in French art history and philosophy. Matching funds bring total near 250000. First courses for freshmen start in fall.
Washington reports the Reagan administration blames the Soviet Union for no constructive moves in Geneva while at talks to slow the nuclear arms race. An anonymous U S official says the Soviets did not table new proposals and backtracked on past offers. The next round is set for May 30 as Paul Nitze weighs in at the National Press Club.
Aiken woman driving a brown Chevrolet was injured when a beverage truck crossed into her northbound lane on S C 19 while a school bus stopped for children. Paramedics freed her from the car. she sustained leg and head injuries. A charge is expected.
Clouds linger tonight with lows in the 50s and southeast winds. Tomorrow turns mostly cloudy with highs in the 70s and a 60 percent chance of showers and possible thundershowers in the afternoon.

At 8 30 Tuesday night Mark A Baynham appeared optimistic as results pointed to Tom Greene likely becoming North Augusta mayor officials said. The crowd gathered at the election central in North Augusta watched the race unfold with Baynham predicting Greene would win.
In North Augusta key precincts 28 and 27 swung the race as Greene overtook Baynham. With North Augusta High School and Hammond Hills Elementary reporting, Baynham lost ground and Greene led by about 400 votes after a 747 to 219 result.
About 15 Aiken churches join for Religious Heritage Day with a 150 member massed choir at First Baptist Church on Chesterfield Street N this Sunday at 7 30 pm. The program features a band, organ and piano with selections from Old Hundredth to Battle Hymn of the Republic and a gift of love. Sam Gary of Zion Fair Baptist will solo Let My People Go.
The Department of Energy will hold two scoping meetings in May near Aiken and Beaufort to gather public comments on the environmental impact statement for hazardous low level liquid waste handling at the Savannah River Plant. Spokesman Carl Nandrasy says new disposal methods will replace seepage basins from the 1950s to 1970s and that upgrades will proceed as a process.
The National Endowment for the Humanities approves a $170,000 grant for USC Aiken to support the Humanities Focus program. When combined with matching funds it could reach about a quarter of a million dollars. Three new humanities teachers will be hired for the 1987 fall start.
The Aiken County Board of Education heard reports and clarifications from school improvement councils. Councils, formed by parents teachers students and community members, will have at least two parents and two teachers with student representation for grades 9-12. Councils outlined test score goals attendance increases dropout reductions and facility needs while stressing improved remedial instruction staff development and parent training.
