The Tax Foundation in Washington reports the typical worker must toil 122 days to pay all federal state and local taxes this year. Today marks the 122nd work day, one day later than in 1983, with taxes allocated across individuals and corporations.
In Northfield Minnesota a 36 year old Wisconsin man was jailed after a failed bank robbery at First National Bank of Northfield. Local historian Maggie Lee says the suspect lacks a sense of history noting the 1876 James Gang attack ended with failed robberies. In New York burglars hit the Diamond Exchange vault stealing at least 3 million in jewelry.
Lexington County grand jury indicts 22 year old Rodney Russell son of state Senator Norma Russell on first degree criminal sexual conduct charges. Jack Hensell says indictment followed testimony from the investigator and the accuser. Trial date not set and backlog may delay proceedings.
A 13 page opinion by South Carolina Attorney General Travis Medlock states no statute expressly forbids selling a child. He urges corrective legislation to clarify adoption laws and criminal aspects and notes private adoptions complicate the issue. Rep. Witnesses described hearing two explosions and a vehicle burning, with details from neighbors and responders.
Louisville AP Woody Stephens announces Devil's Bag, 1983 2-year-old champion, will not run in Saturdays Kentucky Derby. The trainer, resting in the hospital, says Swale is doing well and will be his Derby choice. Swale trained in Aiken while Devil's Bag passed through Florida en route.
