In Belfast a British army officer was killed when a car bomb exploded near City Hall. Police said the blast also damaged a main street. Elsewhere terrorists failed to assassinate Protestant leader Ivan Cooper as his car blew up after a phone call directing him to a hospital.
Turkish troops sealed off a house near Niksar to capture leftist kidnapers who seized three Western radar technicians. The terrorists demanded conditions for the technicians release, but Interior Minister Ferit Kubat refused to negotiate.
Gabriel Heatter, famed radio commentator known for there’s good news tonight, died today at age 82 at the Miami Heart Institute after a five year illness. AP report with wire photo.
Bolivia's right wing military government orders 119 Soviet Embassy personnel to leave within seven days amid accusations the mission funds leftist rebel movements. Foreign Minister Mario Gutierrez says the action corrects a situation threatening public tranquility.
Harvard professor Samuel Popkin was sentenced to a maximum 18 months in jail for civil contempt after refusing to answer questions from a grand jury investigating the Pentagon Papers leak. Aiken County Health Department denied running the dog pound, while Dr. J. T. Hair said the department only handles rabies control. Frank Holley, rabies control officer, claimed authority and budget for the pound, with supervisor Mackey Scott insisting Holley runs it.

A fire and series of explosions at Interstate Pyrotechnics Corp in Bridgewater injured at least ten workers. A consumer group representationing Ralph Nader proposes cash penalties from airlines for delays. The plan, by the Aviation Consumer Action Project, would pay passengers the ticket price for canceled flights and 25 dollars for every half hour late. The group cites CAB filings showing 26 percent of flights on the 200 busiest routes were at least 15 minutes late in 1970.
Dr. Robert Schneider reports no evidence that cats transmit leukemia or cancer to humans. Studies of pets and families show no excess cancer in people with sick cats or dogs, and blood tests in veterinarians found only one likely false positive.
