Du Pont Co will end its lengthy tenure as operator of the Savannah River Plant this Friday. The transition Du Pont employees will experience and the old Dun bar Cemetery are featured today in the third part of a series on Du Pont's relationship with Aiken County.
The IRS prepared a plan dated December 1988 to remain in business during a nuclear attack, prioritizing revenue from taxes. Local officials and business leaders foresee broad benefits beyond deposit gains.
Aiken City Council approved on first reading an annexation ordinance for the north side of Kalmia Hill between Gregg Avenue and Shadow Drive on Richland Avenue. Voters in the area chose annexation on March 14, with the action requiring U.S. DOJ certification and city zoning set at R 1 Single Family Residential.
VALDEZ Alaska authorities investigated claims captain of Exxon Valdez had drinking problems as crews battled a massive 100 square mile oil spill. NTSB stated Captain Hazelwood, 42, was not on the bridge when the ship left lanes to avoid ice and struck a reef. Hazelwood may testify at hearings starting April 4 in Anchorage.
Aiken County Board of Education approved 6.3 million dollars in school building bonds for 1989. A 1989-90 tax increase of about 1.2 million will be required for Aiken and Saluda counties. The millage rate will be set by the school board and county council by July 1 and depends on property values. The bonds began in the early 1980s to fund district construction and renovations.
Ten years after the Three Mile Island accident residents near Harrisburg still feel hurt and betrayed. About 150 people protested the plant and a candlelight vigil was planned at 4 a.m. as activists challenge federal and state responses and health studies. Damages from the plant remain disputed with 2000 claims and a母 million settlement cited, while a Middletown woman says her son was born with Down syndrome after the accident.
