About 250 inmates seized rifles from guards at Pavon prison farm near Guatemala City and held Easter visitors hostage. Six people were killed and about 20 wounded in the uprising. The revolt left up to 400 hostages reported and controlled parts of the facility as officials reviewed inmates demands.

Senate committee to hear both sides on South Carolina’s proposed state lottery. Sen. Ryan Shealy argues crime rates do not rise with state lotteries and cites FBI data from 18 states. Opponents contend the plan harms the poor and would not curb crime. A statewide lottery could raise about 100 million dollars yearly for indigent care local governments and elderly programs with remaining funds for education equipment.
