Saigon reports that South Vietnamese rangers killed 64 enemy troops in a second major battle in five days in the Plain of Reeds. It notes light ranger casualties and says the unit used armored personnel carriers artillery and air support near the Cambodian border west of Saigon.
Several hundred North Vietnamese troops attacked a Laotian government position five miles north of the Long Cheng base but were beaten back with AC-47 gunships. Laotian casualties were light. Vietnamese losses unknown. A day earlier, two other government posts in the same area were attacked. one was captured but retaken by government forces.
John Cahill, 19, son of Gov. Cahill, was arrested in New Jersey for a second time since January on marijuana possession charges. State police said a black bag containing marijuana was tossed from his car during a Tuesday stop. His bail on a prior Philadelphia charge was revoked and he was returned to Holmesburg Prison.
A fabled one cent stamp the British Guiana 1856 one cent magenta sold at auction for 280000 dollars. A syndicate of eight businessmen from Wilkes Barre Pennsylvania purchased it Tuesday night. The stamp created as a unique item by a Demerara printer in 1856 was unknown until 1873 when a schoolboy found it among family papers and sold it for six shillings.
Postmaster General Winton Blount pressed union leaders to start talks on a pay raise as thousands of strikers return to work. Mail stacks dwindled in Chicago Philadelphia and Detroit while a federal judge ordered the Manhattan Bronx local to resume by 5 p.m. EST or face fines. Federal troops remained in New York offices and Brooklyn carriers voted to end their walkout.
A 22 story elderly housing project in Fargo North Dakota is halted after a six inch list is found. Fargo Housing Authority inspector Robert Metchler says footing has not failed and the structure is out of plumb due to heavy top load. A cable will be attached to pull the building straight and cross braces added on each floor to restore alignment.
The United States 500th announced nuclear blast at the Nevada Test Site was postponed today due to strong winds. The AEC said Project Handley is tentatively rescheduled for 7 am Thursday with a final decision after a weather briefing.
Mrs Rose Kennedy unveiled a bust of President John F Kennedy at the Psychopedagogic Institute in Bayamon Puerto Rico on Tuesday honoring the late leader. The event drew local officials and attendees paying tribute to the slain president.
Rev. Donald Wilkerson, once out of place in small towns, now acts as an advisor on drug abuse. He warns that soft drugs lead to hard drugs and urges a four week training for volunteers to run a teen hot line and provide treatment information. He stresses prevention on college campus spillover and aimed at teens and parents.
Aiken Owens-Corning Fiberglas plant offers a $1,000 reward for information leading to arrests and convictions after a bomb scare disrupted the second and third shifts for about two hours. Plant Manager Michael Hardwick announced the reward as officials searched the premises after anonymous calls claimed bombs to go off at midnight. The second shift was evacuated at 11 p.m. and the third shift at 1 a.m. Local authorities continue the investigation.
Aiken County Schools will observe spring holidays with closures. Eastern Schools close Friday and Monday, April 9 and 10. Area 4 Ridge Spring Monet ta Wagener Salley schools close tomorrow instead of April 9.
President Nixon proposed an $1.5 billion two year program aimed at improving education in schools affected by neighborhood patterns while insisting de facto segregation is not federal business. Southern senators criticized the freedom of choice approach and civil rights leaders questioned the political motives of the move.
TEL AVIV AP Israel reports its pilots shot down four Egyptian planes over the Suez Canal area marking the largest air victory in over six months. The command says all Israeli planes returned safely and notes 80 Egyptian planes downed by Israel since the 1967 war. A night raid hit antiaircraft batteries inside Egypt and other military objectives.
Democrat C H Shaw defeated Republican James M Brabham 409 to 235 to become mayor of New Ellenton. Shaw, who runs the New Ellenton Insurance Agency, returns after eight years in office. Democrats swept five council seats to one for Republicans. Ballots reached 672 of about 1000 registered amid a vigorous two party campaign.
Southern Railway will keep its six mile right of way through Aiken, blocking hopes for a downtown road. City officials dispute reports of industrial plans as the 1852 cut remains unused north to Warrenville. The railroad notes no decision yet on abandoning service and rejected plans for a fall out shelter and courthouse move.
