Postal rate hike to 25 cents affects bills books and more

The 25 cent first class rate next month will drive higher costs across many sectors as firms raise prices on bills advertising and subscription items. Utilities banks and stores expect higher billing costs and annual adds for a weekly magazine and book club mailings. In Minnesota a hay barn fire killed 70 breeding horses valued around ten thousand each with total losses near 1.2 million. The fire took 90 minutes to control and cause is under investigation.

Civil Rights Bill Now Law Overrides Reagan Veto

Supporters say the Civil Rights Restoration Act cures an epidemic of discrimination after the 1984 Supreme Court ruling. Congress overrode Reagan's veto with 73-24 in the Senate and 202-133 in the House. Ralph Neal called it a bipartisan reaffirmation of civil rights.
