Former Du Pont workers pledge $67.5 million to help asbestos victims

Three ex Du Pont employees from Maryland and Delaware plan to donate 67.5 million of a 75 million personal injury award to six institutions aiding asbestos sufferers. Spokesman William Kapp Jr. says the gifts occur if the award stands on appeal after a jury held Raymark Industries liable for concealing asbestos hazards.

Officer Shot Survives Ambush in California

Police officer Harry D. Armstrong, 32, was wounded but saved by his bulletproof vest after a close range ambush in Jakland California. He was writing a crime report when shots rang out from bushes. More than 20 officers searched the area for nearly three hours. no suspect found. Armstrong has five years on force with no threats on record.

Noriega Offers Resignation. Opposition Rejects Talks

Gen Manuel Noriega offered to resign before the May 1989 election if opponents agree to talks with his regime but the opposition and the United States dismissed the move. Aurelio Barria said there would be no dialogue and the general must go immediately. State Department called the offer a ploy while noting Noriega should quit sooner for Panama. The economy, crippled after U.S. drug charges against Noriega, neared collapse as he sought a nationally televised resignation conditioned on a dialogue with a hand picked panel.

Aiken City Council Adopts Revised 4-2-1 Election Plan

Aiken City Council on first reading adopted a revised 4-2-1 election plan with changes to district boundaries, polling places, and the election schedule.
