Fires raged in Baghdad as Tomahawk missiles struck targets across the city after 9 p.m. The air assault followed sirens and created a night of silence broken by explosions. Two Iraqi palaces were destroyed in the latest missile campaign on the capital.
The United States launches a broad campaign with air and ground forces advancing about one third toward Baghdad. Rumsfeld says Saddam and lieutenants are losing control while Hussein meets with military leaders. An official denounces Rumsfeld as a criminal dog. Two U S Marines die in southern Iraq near an oil pumping station and Umm Qasr as British forces seize key southern oil facilities to protect postwar reconstruction.
Acting Secretary Harland T. Johnson, a retired four star Air Force general raised in Aiken, leads the Navy as war in Iraq intensifies. His sister, brother, nieces and nephews remain nearby, keeping ties to the South Carolina town. Johnson stays busy as events unfold overseas.
Acting secretary and de facto undersecretary of the Navy, Johnson, a 1959 US Air Force Academy graduate and Vietnam era veteran, reflects on his tenure since February 7, his family, local friends, and a career spanning Desert Storm, the Military Airlift Commands, and service under Cheney and Powell. President Bush named him Assistant Secretary of the Navy on August 3, 2001.
Clarence Jackson may appeal the March 14 suspension of TNTs Bar and Grill business license at 3607 Richland Ave in Aiken. City records cite unlawful activity in the establishment and fights in the parking lot observed by two non uniformed officers on March 13 prompting the action.
South Carolina Senator Tommy Moore is advocating a statewide DNA database to help solve long unsolved crimes. The bill, advanced by the Senate Judiciary Committee, would require felons with five year or more sentences to provide DNA samples, replacing blood tests with oral swab testing.
