State lottery bill delayed by Senate Finance committee action

A side trip to the Senate Finance Committee could push debate on a state lottery bill back by two weeks. Finance Committee Chairman Hugh Leatherman of Florence said he will appoint a subcommittee to study the bill by the Senate Judiciary Committee meeting on Tuesday.

Baldwin escapes life sentence in motel robbery case

Baldwin received a 20 year term for first degree burglary and armed robbery after a mixed jury found him guilty. Judge James R Barber III warned that violent crime charges could yield life in prison. Police credited rapid response by Aiken DPS in foiling the Oct. 29 Royal Inn break-in.

Stewards Shape Fair Play at Aiken Steeplechase Race

Steve Groat, presiding steward at the Aiken Steeplechase, defines stewards as the eyes and ears of a race course. They enforce National Steeplechase Association rules, arbitrate jockey and trainer issues, ensure safety, verify beacon placement and bolting, and oversee day of event operations across nine spring and seven fall races. Groat, an Aiken resident, has led nine years and will oversee events from the steward’s stand ensuring fair competition.

Aiken County narrows administrator finalists to two

Aiken County Council reduced a field of about 70 applicants to two candidates for the administrator post. Robert A. Tony Rojas, city manager of Moultrie Georgia, and Steven Brown of Augusta remain, while former County Administrator L C Greene was dropped. Both finalists have extensive government experience, with Rojas’ background in Hawkinsville and Vidalia and Brown’s roles in Naples and Leesburg.

Winning Way Aiken’s Project VISION earns See WINNING honor
