A retired United Methodist bishop from Tennessee is assigned to fill the vacancy created by the death of Bishop Joseph Bethea. Bishop Robert H. Spain of Brentwood will serve as Columbia area bishop, term expires September 1, 1996. Bethea died at age 62 from an apparent heart attack on March 12.
