AG to drop one murder charge against Pritchardville man

South Carolina Attorney General Charlie Condon will stop prosecuting one murder count against Donald Boyd of Pritchardville while appealing the other murder charge in the deaths of Reyna Boyd and James Smith. Circuit Judge Baxley had ruled insufficient evidence to jurors for Smith’s death, leading Solicitor Randolph Murdaugh III to drop the wife’s murder charge. The AG’s office will appeal the Smith case to the state Court of Appeals, arguing the trial lacked a jury determination of guilt. Boyd was released in February after the trial collapsed. prosecutors contend he shot in self defense and by accident.
