Devon McCoy said a space heater likely started the 2 p.m. fire that destroyed his trailer at 404 New Bridge Road in Couchton. Firefighters from several departments battled the blaze due to lack of nearby hydrants. McCoy escaped with minor injuries as investigators work to determine the cause.
Federal officials confirmed the Savannah River Site pause on the $600 million plutonium immobilization unit as part of a broader budget review. The plan, to turn weapons-grade material into stable glass blocks, is on hold while the mixed-oxide fuel facility remains on track to convert plutonium into fuel for commercial reactors.
