Jim Thunder a Cree runner on a 2700 mile journey to the American Museum of Natural History pleads for the return of Chief Big Bear's calico wrapped bundle. DOE argues environmental study delay could hinder SRP reactor restart

The Department of Energy warns that national security could be harmed if a pending suit blocks restarting the Savannah River Plant reactors until a full environmental impact statement is completed. Environmental groups say the safety disclosures require the EIS before any restart. The SRP's three production reactors, sole source of perishable tritium gas, have been idle for upgrades with no restart date set. The DOE will prepare the EIS but will not make it a restart condition. groups threaten injunction if restart occurs before completion.

Cothran to Retire as Aiken Standard Editor March 31

Samuel A. Cothran will retire March 31 after 21 years as editor and publisher of the Aiken Standard. He will be succeeded by Scott B. Hunter, a 15 year veteran who became general manager in 1987. Cothran’s career spans half a century guiding the paper through growth and modernizing to a 24 000 square foot plant with offset press.
