Eight legislators form Citizens for Strom Thurmond to oppose restoring Clarks Hill Lake. Led by Sen. John Drummond the group announced at the Statehouse amid ongoing dispute after Congress renamed the Georgia South Carolina border reservoir from Clarks Hill to Strom Thurmond.
A 9 foot stained glass window found in a Memphis church garage is identified as a Louis Tiffany piece by Dan Oppenheimer a Memphis stained glass studio owner and author. The window shows Jesus with drapery glass a Tiffany technique dating to about 1905 and is described as a glorious find.
The Aiken Standard will publish its annual Triple Crown special edition Friday. The 9-page tabloid features facts features and pictures about Aiken's equine industry with extra copies at the circulation office.
The temperature will drop to the mid 20s tonight then rise to the low 60s tomorrow with sunny skies. Details are on Page 4B.

Chicago AP report notes Sen Paul Simon defeated Jesse Jackson in Illinois while George Bush led Republicans with Dole and Robertson trailing. Dukakis drew near parity with Jackson in delegate surveys as Democrats await Minnesota Texas and Washington caucuses.
Aiken Mile Track owners withdrew a 1.2 acre Banks Mill Road rezoning request. The Planning Commission received Greenlee Flanagin’s withdrawal letter during pre meeting and the reasons or future plans were not disclosed. The commission also addressed horses in the agenda.
Two senators plan amendments to the Price Anderson Act to increase nuclear industry liability for damages in a nuclear accident. Spokesman Christopher Simpson said Sen. Strom Thurmond opposes changing the act, while Sens. Howard Metzenbaum and John Glenn of Ohio push for tougher terms. The Senate may take up the bill within days, though odds on adoption appear unlikely.
COLUMBIA AP The South Carolina House approved a 3 billion dollar balanced budget with no tax hike in record time. The measure funds public education and state employee pay, including a 4 percent raise and a 1 percent one-time bonus, while limiting the reserve fund and protecting it in the constitution. The Senate now considers the bill as lawmakers note election year politicking and a fast finish.
