Edwin Black, 20, sued after ripping his pants in a city dug hole in December. After three months and one City Finance Committee meeting, he was told the City Council must meet to grant $15 restitution. He plans to claim the money once the council approves, with pants shown as proof.
Bobby the parrot lived in a waiting room cage of two doctors and sang "I Am a Pilgrim" and "It Ain't Gonna Rain No More" before dying Saturday at age 75. Gifted to Dr. H E Christenberry by a Central American missionary in 1919, he survived a stroke six months earlier and a new cage perch eased him until a second stroke last week.
Senator Edward M Kennedy walked among about 50 000 Lawrence area residents despite written threats to his life. A heavy guard and a state police helicopter protected him and his wife Joan after parade officials received letters threatening harm. Details of the threats were not released.
General William C. Westmoreland told 4000 New York City policemen at a Sunday communion breakfast that young Americans are turning from peaceful protest to violence. He said the nation has become unnaturally permissive and warned that things could get worse before they improve.
Al Hirt returns to Carnegie Hall for the first time since a brick strike in New Orleans. He played with his upper lip inflamed and cortisone, after receiving 15 stitches on February 15 following the Mardi Gras incident on a parade float with other celebrities. Critics offered mixed reviews as the audience cheered.
Bladimer Rajchlo was forced to land his small airplane on a highway outside Jacksonville as fuel ran low. Police delivered refueling cans and blocked traffic to allow him to take off again at the closed service station.
Sweetwater Texas ends its annual rattle snake hunt after three days with about 130 hunters from the United States and Canada. The longest snake caught measured 6 feet 2 inches, while the smallest was about a foot. Snakes were milked by professionals for venom used in antivenom serums.
Mrs Richard M Nixon marked her 58th birthday with a private family dinner after the event was noted by relatives. Born Thelma Catherine Ryan in Ely Nevada on March 16 1912 she was nicknamed Pat by her father for St Patrick's Day.
Aiken Steeplechase announces 2 p.m. Saturday post for the first race with spectators in a grandstand. A new inside rail and paddock are added while features stay: an afternoon in the country, and the popular ladies race titled The William K Laughlin Cup with horses ridden in colors. Bird notes minimum weight is 10 stone and avoids naming reasons.
Aiken Trials drew a large crowd despite a biting west wind. Families and fans filled the trackside, parking packed before 2 p m as horses prepared for the 28th running. Spectators traveled from multiple states to witness the event.
The Aiken County Sheriff's Department with the county solicitor seized an X rated film at the Fox Drive-In Theater on Highway 19 south. Assistant solicitor Lavaun Fox said charges are pending. The sheriff said the film Cherry, Harry and Raquel was obscene. Authorities also raided a Six Points service station for illegal beer sales valued at 847.90, and recovered 100 more. Also busted were two men for breaking and entering and grand larceny linked to local stores and a church. Police reported several other incidents around the Aiken Trials weekend. Disclosure notes identify suspects Eddie Simmons and Marlon Matthews and victims in the Midland Valley area.
The Aiken High School Symphonic Band earned an excellent rating at the S C State Band Festival in Gaffney, scoring 87 to 94 as an AAAA ensemble. Judges included Bruce Housknecht Jeff Bradford Billy Verran and Richard Feasel. Directors are William Slaughter and James A Kitchings.
Eight candidates file for six GOP nominations in Aiken County races on June 9, including four House seats with incumbent Marshall Cain and former members Zack Fulmer and Delmos Weeks. Magistrate races draw nine candidates across eight districts, with Graniteville the only contested magistrate contest. Five seek four seats on the County Delegation, plus filings for constables and road commissioner positions.
Two Aiken County men James Jenkins 26 of Montmorenci and Roy Lee Ray 23 of New Ellenton died in a Sunday two car crash nine miles south of Aiken. Ray’s remains will be sent to Wake Forest North Carolina for funeral arrangements. A Spartanburg County crash killed John Lafayette Woodson 67 of Greer.
