Area waste site operator sued by DHEC over consent order
DHEC filed an enforcement action in Aiken County against Bobby Brewer Jr operator of Metal Retrievers for alleged violations of state pollution laws and failure to comply with an August 2000 consent order to clean up oils diesel fuel hydraulic fluids tires and soil at the Fire Tower Road facility. Inspections found over 100 spills and multiple debris items with a daily penalty of 100 accruing since late February. Brewer has 30 days to respond.

Storytime program returns to Hopelands Gardens
Hopelands Storytime resumes weekly through May at 4 p.m. in Hopelands Gardens behind the Thoroughbred Racing Hall of Fame. Senior readers entertain 70 to 150 children with three or four books, with a free book for each child at the end. On rainy Tuesdays the event moves to H Odell Weeks Activities Center.
