Death toll rises in Guatemala children's shelter fire
GUATEMALA CITY The death toll from a blaze at a Guatemalan children's shelter climbed to 40 as another girl died from burns. Nineteen victims burned at the scene, 21 more died in hospitals. The fire started when residents set mattresses on fire during a protest at the overcrowded facility. Authorities seek answers amid protective services scrutiny and the agency head was ordered to stay in Guatemala during the probe. Four victims were flown to Shriners Hospital for Children in Galveston, Texas, after arrangements by the Shriners Hospitals.
