USC Coach Sees Coaching Controversy After Loss
The University of South Carolina team led by Frank McGuire questions coast to coast game officials after an ACC tournament setback. Sand Bar Ferry at Beech Island Tells of Old Slavery Era Toll Trade
The Sand Bar Ferry across the Savannah River at Beech Island was owned by Capt Abner Whatley before the Civil War and left to his wife. Their son T W Whatley tended it for Mrs Whatley. An old Negro ran the ferry during the war and kept precise wall marks for tolls. Later Houston McCoy and assistant Ben Warren operated the ferry with a flatboat capacity up to 100. Pedestrian tolls were 10 or 15 cents, wagons paid little, and pleasure vehicles paid 50 cents each way. Houston, aged about 102 at his death, reportedly continued running the ferry.
