Barbara Spivey and her husband opened Marble Slab Creamery at Shoppes at Whiskey in 2005 after moving from Georgia in 2002. The 10th anniversary celebration highlighted a busy decade employing 180 to 200 local youths, with many rising into teaching roles and other careers.
Musician and Marble Slab franchisee Spivey runs a small operation with her husband separate from a big corporation. She mentors a group of kids and teaches pride in work while distributing coupons and building community ties. The store makes ice cream on a frozen slab with fresh ingredients and gains posters and recipes from the franchiser, but royalties are its only royalties. Cristina Cleveland reports from Aiken.
