Bond referendum targets six Aiken schools for new construction

The nine member Aiken County Board of Education unanimously approved a $236 million bond referendum set for Tuesday May 25 to fund six schools for off site or onsite rebuilding. The plan includes Aiken High North Augusta High Leavelle McCampbell Middle Ridge Spring Monetta Elementary Middle Jackson Middle and the Aiken County Career and Technology Center with tax impact and additional projects at Wagener Saltley RS Monetta High and RS-M Elementary Middle moving to a K 12 campus. The board split on Jackson Middle School with 6 2 backing a site move to the Silver Bluff High campus alongside New Ellenton Middle Schools.

Downtown Aiken adopts three phase traffic system

State transportation crews completed a three phase signaling upgrade on Park and Richland avenues in downtown Aiken to ease congestion. Phase one allows east and westbound traffic to run together while north and south traffic wait. Phase two moves northbound traffic while southbound remains halted. Phase three grants green to southbound traffic. Left turns receive extra time to clear intersections.
