Augusta man David Joseph Easterling, 30, pleaded guilty in a closed hearing to felony murder for the February 1998 Walker killings near Augusta and to kidnapping with bodily injuries in the Sam’s Club manager David Holt case. Holt was abducted June 21, 1998, forced to open a store safe, and left to die in a burning car across the Savannah River.
Carson Abele a 13 year old from Heathwood Drive returned to his middle school for half days after a February crash at the Brookhaven Heathwood Drives Whiskey Road intersection. He spent seven days in the MCG shock trauma unit and still has a broken knee cap. Abele credits prayers and support from the community for his recovery. A Warrenville man 19 was charged with disregarding a traffic signal after the accident.
Tara Hassell Dorfman, 36, of North Augusta, is accused of poisoning her 9 year old daughter by injecting bacteria into the bloodstream. She was arrested in Aiken County and held for Richmond County authorities after waiving extradition. The child now has a new guardian who says she is healthy and happy since removal.
JET Middle School at Johnston Edgefield Trenton celebrated earning one of South Carolina’s top school honors the Palmetto’s Finest Award. Principal Robert Heflin praised staff district support and a strong writing program as key factors in rising from finalist to winner.
Over 300 educators from across South Carolina gathered in Columbia to protest the General Assembly budget proposal. Aiken County Superintendent Dr. Linda Eldridge warned the budget could cut nearly 2 million in local funding, rolling specific monies into the general fund and harming alternative programs. The event, part of the annual A Day at the Capitol organized by the School Board Association, drew school officials and administrators expressing concerns about teacher salaries and local discretion losses.
