Lonnie McCarthy, administrator at Aiken County Detention Center, says he is insulted by delays after a jail inmate reports being attacked by a guard. SLED investigations were sent to Barbara Morgan who denies sharing details, while promising to speak with the inmate’s father.
Richard S. Patterson and colleagues report a potential 90 percent reduction in U S fire ant populations using a South American fly that parasitizes the ants. The fly lays eggs on ants, the hatched maggots kill the ants, with releases planned after quarantine and studies.
Gov. Beasley named James C. Carper associate professor in USC Educational Psychology as his education adviser. He says Carper shares his philosophy on parental involvement to foster lifelong learning.

Storytime in the Gardens promotes reading in Hopeland Gardens each Tuesday in May at 4 p.m. A senior volunteer reads 20 minute stories and every child selects a free book to take home. The program is sponsored by City of Aiken Parks and Recreation with support from Women of Woodside and Aiken Junior Women's Club. The event is free and open to the public with no registration. Children and parents can also enjoy the gardens and feed the ducks after the readings.
Aiken County Council approved adding eight positions in the Fiscal 1995 budget drawing criticism from Councilman Eddie Butler. Four clerk of court posts, two sheriff deputies, a Wagener parks worker, and a planning planner were added, with staff citing state mandates and local needs. Butler questioned necessity for clerk roles while Administrator William Shepherd said the additions were reluctantly endorsed to comply with state law. Councilman Joel Randall sought a full explanation for the Wagener park position at Roy Warner Park.
Area 3 Superintendent Melanie Hutto and district officials listened to parents at Warrenville Elementary School during the second public forum on proposed elementary rezoning. Kay Chriswell Area 3 Advisory Council members and Linda Warren helped discuss the maps and welcomed input.

Jim Sutherland, a 16 year Westinghouse environmental scientist, and his wife Rebekah bought a house five years ago with plans to settle. With potential SAS budget cuts, they listed their home and may move to an apartment, hoping to avoid long-term financial risk.
