Inflation Could Be Rekindled by Monetarist Warning

A Shadow Open Market Committee of monetarist economists warned that double-digit inflation and stagnation could return in two to three years. They urged the Fed to slow money supply growth, curb federal spending, take a tougher stance on loans to debt-ridden nations, and oppose protectionist trade limits. Led by Allan Meltzer, the group says inflation remains in the system and long-term rates reflect inflation risk despite oil-price declines.

Aiken County Board to Decide Millage and Policy Changes

The Aiken County Board of Education meets at 7:30 p.m. at the Educational Center 843 Edgefield Ave NW to consider a millage request and a proposed layoff policy. Also on the agenda are graduation requirements changes effective 1984 85, eliminating valedictorians, and a transfer deadline policy set for April 1. The board will hear a Black Coalition presentation on minority teacher counts and decide about boiler repairs at several schools and a $12 344 76 apple purchase.

Fake Sex Survey Calls Hit Augusta and Aiken

A rash of prank calls claimed to be from a Medical College of Georgia staffer asks residents in Aiken for personal information and obscene questions. Hospital officials say ignore the calls and note that similar pranks have occurred in Augusta before.

Finish Line Snackers Sparkled at Triple Crown Event

A spectator said it is easier to stand at the finish of the 10 mile run and cheer while eating Girl Scout cookies. Aiken Training Track hosted a volleyball tourney with two nets in a Greentree Stable paddock. Greentree stables competed in double elimination. Steve Penrod’s stable won, defeating Amazon Farm Phipps in the finals.
