Clemson Extension Service Faces 170 Possible Layoffs

Clemson Extension Service may lay off 160 to 170 employees due to a proposed 3.7 million cut in federal funding. Director B K Webb says the agency is already personnel heavy and a reduced budget would force cutbacks in staff. The cuts are part of a 50 billion package debated by Congress aiming to trim the 1987 deficit. Clemson runs agricultural, home economics, community development and 4 H programs with 650 to 700 staff funded by state federal and local governments.
