A unscientific Aiken Standard survey shows 83 percent of 368 respondents favor a state lottery with 17 percent opposed. Some call for lanes on related betting reform while religious concerns shape the debate. Proponents include Sen. Ryan C. Shealy who cites indigent care funding as a use for lottery proceeds.
Aiken woman Doris Seabolt, 40, was charged in a Augusta hit and run that left Ronald Lawson, 34, of Augusta, hospitalized for observation. Police tracked her car after residents gave a description, with the crash at Browns Lane and Division Street. Seabolt faces DUI, improper backing, and leaving the scene charges.
Aiken police say 25 year old James Heath of Route 1 in Aiken was arrested after a 1 am break in at Holmes Jewelers on Laurens Street. Charges include house breaking larceny assault with a motor vehicle burglary tools failure to stop and reckless driving. Jewelry missing and later recovered. Officers Brent Kirkland and David Willis were slightly hurt in a chase ending on Morgan Street.
New Ellenton officials had submitted a pre-application for financial aid but the Farmers Home Administration refused the request and denied the funding proposal.

A National Center for Health Statistics study shows U S divorces fell from 1 213 000 in 1981 to 1 170 000 in 1982 a 43 000 drop the first decline in 20 years The report notes the divorce rate declined from 5 3 to 5 0 per 1 000 population and attributes the trend partly to later marriages and longer education for young people in the changing U S population.
The Southern Bell office in Aiken will close May 17 as part of statewide consolidations. Manager Steve Griffin says the company cut 14 offices in two years, reducing 1,230 jobs plus 1,500 transferred to AT&T, with Aiken staff totaling 5,038 after divestiture. A new 5 digital electronic switching system and fiber optic link to Augusta will boost service, at a total project cost over 6.5 million dollars.
