Banks weigh hats and hoods rule to deter robberies
The South Carolina Bankers Association urges its 101 member banks to bar hats hoods and sunglasses inside branches to deter robberies. The policy, modeled after programs in Massachusetts Missouri and Oklahoma, aims to reduce masked or undetected suspects and was praised by U.S. Attorney J Strom Thurmond Jr. as improving safety for customers and staff. Regions Bank and others consider adopting the rule pending impact on patrons. In 2003 SC saw 151 bank and credit union robberies, up from 2002.
