An off duty Orangeburg police officer Maurice Jordan was arrested in Aiken on three counts of assault with intent to kill after firing at a vehicle believed to contain his girlfriend. Witnesses say he forced two residents to ride with him and fired from a Cavalier on Williamsburg Street.
Martha Stewart and ex broker Peter Bacanovic were convicted on multiple counts including conspiracy and false statements. Stewart faces sentencing June 17 while free pending appeal. courtroom reactions ranged from stoic to supportive as jurors cited market harm and deceit.
Martha Stewart was found guilty of conspiracy obstruction of justice and two counts of making false statements. The charges carry up to 20 years in prison but experts expect a sentence near one year under federal guidelines.
Darren Norris, a 7 plus year veteran of the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office, will join a government contractor to help build police infrastructure in Iraq for a year with possible extension. Lt. David Burgess will lead the SWAT team in Norris’s absence as Norris trains overseas and pursues further degrees.
A Windsor man, 61 year old David J. Wilson, died from multiple injuries after his 1999 Ford Taurus veered off State Park Road and overturned. His 11 year old son was uninjured and transported to MCG, not wearing a seatbelt. The incident occurred Friday and is under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
An Aiken Public Safety officer saw heavy smoke from a wood area off S C Highway 19 and alerted responders. Three Aiken engines and two Center Fire Department tankers fought the fire to a single story home left with only a brick fireplace and chimney. Neighbors say the owner has not been home for three months and investigators will continue to probe the blaze.
