Hofmann Piano Competition Draws World Junior Aiders

Top young pianists from Mexico Russia and Armenia compete in the Eighth Annual Josef Hofmann Piano Competition and Festival at the University of South Carolina Aiken. Prize money totals 10000 to be shared by Raffi Besalyn Silvana Dmitri Teterin and Anton Morsadov. Performances begin at 7 am Thursday and Friday with judge Leonid Kuzmin. Dates announced for spring turkey hunts

The 2001 turkey season opens March 31 and runs through May 1 for all Wildlife Management Areas and private lands in 34 counties. Private land hunting runs March 15 to May 1 in Allendale, Bamberg, Barnwell, Beaufort, Berkeley, Calhoun, Charleston, Colleton, Dorchester, Hampton, Jasper and Orangeburg counties. Whiskey Road Oyster Factory Opens in Aiken

The Whiskey Road Oyster Factory at 1208 Whiskey Road opened Thursday Feb 22 with a light opening to work out kinks. Owner Eric Kitchings aims to lure locals away from Augusta by offering fresh seafood and a casual atmosphere with both indoor and outside bars. Aiken Center for the Arts Announces 10 Spring Classes

The Center for Arts unveils a new spring semester at the Aiken Center offering 10 shorter, lower cost classes for children and adults. Programs include acrylic painting, magic, balloon art, antique appreciation, basket weaving, painting workshop, photography, watercolors, and yoga. N A girl spreads anti violence message at Georgia middle school

North Augusta resident Nana Chafin spoke at Lakeside Middle School Augusta during a STOP the Violence assembly. She shared her experience of bullying loss of hair and friends as a National Alopecia Areata Foundation ambassador. The talk urged recognition of middle school violence types and highlighted FCCLA STOP the Violence Campaign.

Defensive driving courses offered by Aiken public safety veteran

Wendell Edwards of the Aiken Department of Public Safety offers defensive driving seminars through his Drive Right Driving Techniques. The four and eight hour AAA certified courses aim to reduce collisions, with options for daycare and assisted living drivers. A 20 dollar daycare date is set for April 17 at 8 am to noon.
