Absentee balloting begins at Aiken County Registration and Elections Commission on Vaucluse Road as residents decide whether to keep the 4-2-1 plan or switch to a 5-1-1 system for council representation. Balloting runs weekdays 9 am to 4 pm for those unable to participate, with the special election set for April.
The Aiken County Board of Education will hold a special meeting to review two budgets as state mid year cuts of 8.73 percent reduce per pupil funds. Superintendent Dr Linda Eldridge says decisions will cover immediate actions and next year adjustments while noting a drop in per student allocation from 2083 to 1613 dollars and about 12.3 million in two years. The district has saved 500,000 by leaving vacancies open and no substitutes for short term staff absences. Board Chairman Dr John Bradley aims to shield classroom instruction as cuts loom.
Target and other volunteers hosted Read Across America events at Aiken targeting civic involvement and childhood literacy. Readers, including Brownie Troop 106, led groups while children enjoyed green eggs and ham cake amid Dr Seuss themed activities marking the author’s birthday.
