The Cardinal Arrives With Song Of Spring

A cardinal signals spring with early February singing after snow. The male courts through antiphonal duet with the mate as she replies then stops, the male continues, and they often sing together. The female wears olive and buff tones, with red-tinted tail and wings, black face and red bill. In the South the cardinal is a beloved yard bird and a radiant singing ruby in winter light.

Birds And Things Cardinal Nesting And Range Expansion Noted

The male helps raise fledglings as a second nest is built, with pairs sometimes rearing multiple broods. Cardinals cluster in flocks in winter and are expanding north into the Mississippi Valley and New England, possibly aided by winter feeding.
