District Superintendent Dr. Robert Paskel warns a 13.5 mill tax increase may be needed to fund a 6.2 percent pay raise for about 2,300 staff. Without more money, 120 to 170 employees could be laid off, and five schools risk probation due to maintenance shortfalls.
A Beech Island convenience store Ye Olde Grocery Shoppe in the 1000 block of Sand Bar Ferry Road was gutted by a fire around 4:15 am. Fire crews from Beech Island Richmond County Bath Jackson and Langley fought the blaze and an electrical short in the ceiling is suspected. A Langley fire truck was stolen and later found overturned near Gloverville.
Senator Tommy Moore faces protest over selecting Clayton C. Boyd for the Langley Bath Clearwater magistrate post. Critics accuse ethical impropriety since Boyd is a business associate. Moore defends choice as fair and based on facts. The appointment awaits Senate and governor approval. Wilson retires March 31.
Senators Thurmond and Mattingly request a 90 day public comment period on restarting the SRS reactor. They seek public hearings in Aiken Beaufort Augusta and Savannah mid period and distribution of the February 9 Senate hearing record. The reactor would supply material for the nuclear weapons program and restart is planned for October.
