The North Augusta Sertoma Club newsletter notes Mr and Mrs John Morris traveled to North Carolina to ski last week. They reportedly spent the day en route and stayed indoors due to rain. The page also cites the Crosland Cryptic on government spending and inflation.
Luther Bigby of the Southern Bell Aiken district office says private phone customers will receive a refund over the next month. One dollar for each month in the last six months of service plus nine percent interest. Refunds via discounted bills sent in late March, complete in April.
The January index of leading indicators fell 1.2 percent driven by drops in building permits and the work week, with five of the eleven measures rising. Officials note uncertainty over whether the slowdown will be orderly or lead to recession while inflation fights continue.
County administrator L C Greene defends stringent requirements for assistant building inspectors while building inspector Joe W Busby leads a three man team at full responsibility for new construction inspections. He notes no current need for more staff despite talks of a new building code.
Aiken County students engage in science fairs to promote understanding of science and experimental methods. CSRA Science and Engineering Fair Corp chair Dr. John B. Black notes fairs build scientific procedure while some schools lack fairs or face low student interest. If fairs are canceled, CSRA can arrange special judging for worthy projects to enter Bell. Ridge Spring-Monetta High nearly cancelled its fair but interest remains strong.
Former Aiken County Council members Forest Kirby and Lucas Ray announced their interest in the coroner vacancy created by James K. Gregory’s resignation for health reasons. Gov Riley may appoint an interim until 1980 while other candidates include John C. Stoll Marvin Buncher and Emory Allen. A public meeting is set for 7 p.m. at USC Aiken to discuss nominees.
Weekend event centers on the Triple Crown Road Race at the H O Weeks Activities Center with two concurrent conferences led by Aiken Community Hospital USC Aiken Quinton Instruments and Intervention. Medical and community leaders will hear speakers on cardiorespiratory fitness and health and tickets for next weekend’s Harness Races are on sale.
