North Augustan Allen Powers mounted a jet propelled sled to clear snow on San Salvador Drive last week. The run toppled three bushes and a sapling, while bystander Paul Benbow quipped about youth and aging as he commented on the scene.
Peking reports small Vietnamese units crossed six to ten miles into China at three points but were repulsed. Both sides regroup in Lang Song area as a major battle is expected there. Hsinhua says shells hit a commune northeast of Lang Son and 60 troops crossed the border, later returning after clashes. 69 Vietnamese killed and one captured. A third incursion near Menton in Malipo county was reported.
President Carter summoned Prime Minister Begin for face to face talks at Camp David to break four month stalemate on a peace treaty with Egypt and Israel. Key issues include Palestinian self rule and treaty precedence over Arab pledges of aid in case of conflict. Carter hopes a frank discussion with Begin leads to an early resumption of negotiations.
Aiken County Council selected a nine member citizens panel to assist wording a building code amendment after a public meeting drew over 200 attendees. The panel includes Peter W. Payette Rufus F. Smith Michael McElhaney Frank Rollins Clyde C. Hooks the Rev. Robert F. Kenney Jr William Allen and Pope N. Turner with Lonnie Barton as at large. Councilman Marvin E. Dunbar and his engineering committee will work with the group to develop the county building code.
The Savannah River Plant faced a 103950 dollar fine by DHEC for coal fired boiler violations in Aiken and Barnwell counties. Half the money will be returned to the counties based on boiler counts, with the rest going to the state general fund. The eight year compliance effort was cited by officials.
Piggly Wiggly, a Charleston based grocery chain, asks the South Carolina Dairy Commission for a permit to distribute milk under its own label to bypass commission price controls. The request wasDeferred by the commission on Monday. The dairy board recently raised wholesale milk prices, stirring costs for some households. Other chains like Kroger A and P Harris Teeter Winn-Dixie often source from out of state or operate their own dairies. The commission plans a hearing within 40 days to consider pricing for retailer pickup. Mike Wells says the chain aims to distribute its milk under a private label.
The 50 Plus Club invited James Bennett to discuss the Triple Crown at a recent meeting. Bennett, a WNEZ radio figure from Valdosta, said the Aiken Standard originated the Triple Crown about 13 years ago and helped keep it alive. Races begin March 10 with Harness Races sponsored by Shriners for crippled children hospital fundraising, followed by the Trials on March 17 run by the Jaycees.
