National Constitution Center opens on Independence Mall
The National Constitution Center in Philadelphia opens July 4 with a $185 million museum, its curators calling it a monument to the charter. Justice Sandra Day O’Connor is set to attend along with politicians and celebrities as the center offers views of Independence Hall three blocks away. The project, conceived over a decade and under construction for three years, opens amid heightened patriotism after the 2001 attacks and amid concerns over civil liberties. The center’s director, Stephen Frank, says the exhibit addresses balancing liberty with security and constitutional controversy spanning 216 years.
