Four year old kindergarten classes shrink across districts as First Steps funding falls short. Lee County will fund two prekindergarten teachers with 75 000 dollars, allowing four classes for 80 students down from over 100. Statewide budget cuts threaten about 2 000 prekindergarten slots and potential score declines in later grades.

First Steps confronts budget cuts threaten child care aid
Wertz and Rauttio warn cuts endanger $60,000 annually for center supplies and $260,000 in scholarships. Most centers are nonprofit and barely survive while 73 percent of the budget funds Aiken County pre k and parenting classes. Board seeks inexpensive programs and expanded dental screening for four and five year olds as funding remains a challenge.
