The Aiken Standard invites growers in Aiken County to submit the largest tomato cucumber and yellow squash this summer. Bring produce to 326 Rutland Drive NW for weighing. Top prize is 75 dollars per division, with 50 and 25 for second and third. Deadline July 25. Photos may be taken when delivering produce.

The Aiken County school board approves a $200 million budget with a 4.7 mill property tax hike. For a $100,000 home this adds $18.80 in taxes and raises teachers' salaries, reduces class sizes, and restores programs with more than $1 million in restored state funding.
Aiken County School Board approves a 5 percent across the board raise for all teachers with amendments planned to allocate over half a million dollars for additional increases. Teachers with under 22 years of service get 1-2 percent step increases. final allocation to be decided at the next meeting.

Joshua Jones a 15 year old North Augusta High School student was placed on indefinite probation after pleading guilty to bringing a handgun to campus May 14 He was released to his father with court guidelines and potential detention for any violation The case will be reviewed by the Aiken County Board of Education before possible readmission to classes
