Lemmon dies at 76 after cancer complications

Los Angeles actor Jack Lemmon dead at 76 from cancer related complications. Spokesman Warren Cowan says his wife Felicia, two children and a stepdaughter were at USC Norris Cancer Center. Lemmon, a two time Oscar winner, had seven lead actor nominations including comedies and dramas.

County to Crack Down on Vehicle Tax Evaders

Aiken County Auditor Cyrus Spradley warned of a crackdown on residents who live in the county but do not pay car taxes. He estimated the county loses around $200,000 yearly in motor vehicle taxes and urged public support and whistleblowers to help enforce registrations and payments.

UPS to Hire 500 for New Aiken Facility

UPS will recruit about 500 employees for a new Aiken facility at Centennial Corporate Park. The first 20 start Aug 2 with orientation Aug 2–4 and training Aug 7 for four to five weeks. A second 20 begin later that week, with ongoing reviews and strict package rating training to meet customs standards.

Firestone closes Illinois plant amid sales slump

Bridgestone/Firestone will shut its Decatur Illinois factory affecting about 1500 workers. The move does not impact the Graniteville plant in South Carolina which employs around 885 and serves GM Isuzu Toyota Ford and the replacement market.

Republicans organize to override Hodges veto in Columbia

Lawmakers return to Columbia with no clear plan on which bills Gov. Jim Hodges will veto. Hodges pledged to veto higher education spending cuts and weighs other budget items, including a $50 million penny tax break on food. Taxpayers protestors say they will lobby to override the veto.
