GOP candidates file for House District 81 seat

By noon on filing day only Republicans Kathryn Kling Skipper Perry and Rebekah Sutherland had qualified to run for the vacancy in House District 81 created by the death of Rep. Rudy Mason. The Aug. 17 primary will determine the nominee with a possible runoff on Aug. 31.

Cyclists Rest in Aiken During 400-Mile Ride Prelude

About 90 cyclists rode from Hardeeville to Winston Salem and stayed overnight at H. Odell Weeks Activities Center in Aiken. Riders from Kentucky Tennessee and South Carolina mingled with locals while exploring downtown and attending Hopelands concert. The group plans Bike South 2000 from Florida to Virginia and emphasizes varied ages and training, with hospitality from local clubs and eateries.

Residents protest as Ryan's plans to annex Whiskey Road site

Karen Papouchado and Mildred Owens voiced concerns at the Mon day city council meeting over Ryan's proposed annexation of a 2257 acre parcel north of Bojangle's to move the restaurant across Whiskey Road for improved parking. The plan preserves several large trees including an 30 inch oak and 28 inch pecan under a village ordinance, with a second reading set for July 12.

Spanish migrant program teaches all year at Ridge Spring

Ridge Spring Monetta Elementary Middle School runs year round classes for 105 students from Aiken Edgefield and Saluda counties. The program focuses on farm related vocabulary under the theme The Farm with activities linking planting harvesting and packing. Attendance averages 60 per day with four teachers and aides guiding students including Monica from Leon Guanajuato.

ATC narrows field in search for president

Aiken Technical College selects four finalists from 32 applicants and nine semifinalists for the president’s post. The slate includes two SC Technical College System executives, an official from the University of South Carolina Aiken, and a career two year college administrator.
