Aiken embraces new chipper to cut landfill trips

The city spent about 80000 on a Bandit chipper that will save roughly 40000 miles of trips to the county landfill annually. The machine costs less than similar models and was developed with Bandit, making Aiken a test site for a Southeast waste reduction effort. If a landfill fee of 2.50 per cubic yard is approved, taxpayers could have faced a 175000 annual charge, but the chipper provides savings without the fee. The device will process limbs into chips for parkways and eventual resident use, with a statewide tour today drawing 30 municipal and county representatives to view the chipper and recycling program.
