NRC: Low level waste deemed harmless may be disposed as trash
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission says about one third of the nation's low level nuclear waste is below regulatory concern allowing it to be disposed of as regular trash. The policy, welcomed by industry, drew consumer fury from Public Citizen's Joan Claybrook who urged removing NRC members. NRC Chair Kenneth Carr defended the plan saying it does not relax disposal rules and will shift focus to greater risks. Representative George Miller warned Congress will scrutinize the policy and a July 2 hearing was scheduled. Carr noted nationwide public forums will follow if not reversed.
