Death of Greenville police dog sparks memorial and staffing concerns
In Greenville County the K9 memorial at the Sheriff’s Office grounds honors eight dogs with cremated remains in urns. The Greenville Police Department mourns Gio who died after escaping his handler’s truck cage. The unit, once six strong, now has two active dogs Rocky and Valor while the sheriff’s unit remains among the state’s largest. Master Deputy Wannemacher leads training efforts shaping green dogs into drug, tracking, and search specialists, with free training offered to other agencies.
