Mr and Mrs Jack Owings of 122 Monteray Belvedere replace Old Glory several times yearly. Mrs Owings says they buy five flags annually to honor a disabled Korean War veteran husband who served from age 17. They display the flag daily believing true Americans fly it every day.
The Aiken City Council gave first reading on transferring Aiken Cablevision’s franchise to First Carolina Communications. Under a June 17 agreement First Carolina will buy all systems in Aiken and adjacent areas with completion expected by July 31.

The Aiken City Council approved election timing for three city seats with filing starting August 30 at noon and ending October 13 at noon, party primaries or conventions on September 27, runoff if needed October 4, and the general election November 8. Also four members were named to the Farmers Market Committee and bids were accepted for fire equipment totaling 6847.10 dollars. The council approved funding shifts for a senior housing project and plans to supply Barclay subdivision water pending county and fire safety approvals, plus several public works funding requests and a lease renewal for a Youth Correction Center air monitor site.
Aiken native Chuck Simons III has been named campaign chair for the United Way in Aiken County. He is an Aiken High School and University of South Carolina graduate and seeks to lead local fund efforts with backing from Tom Cauld Jr, the United Way president.
Mrs. M D Kaney of New Ellenton earned a new car after being chosen as a contestant during a California visit for the TV show The Price Is Right. The program is slated to air Friday September 30.
