Unwed Births Rise Among Young American Women

Census Bureau data show nearly one third of births to women under 25 are to unmarried mothers. In 1985 about 625,000 births occurred outside marriage, with two thirds of these to women aged 18 to 24. White births 20 percent out of wedlock. black women 18 to 24 account for about three quarters of such births.

Outlook Still Dry On Our Drought

Forecasters say South Carolina and North Carolina will remain dry with little relief, noting only scattered showers. The Democratic Party denounced Vice President George Bush for attending a $1,000 per couple fundraiser for Carroll Campbell, citing lost textile jobs and plant closures in South Carolina. Lt. Gov. Bonnie Hits Land In Texas

Hurricane Bonnie struck near Port Arthur Texas with winds up to 85 mph causing power outages and flooding along the Gulf coast. Shelters opened as residents evacuated and authorities reported no serious damage or injuries though a mobile home roof was blown off in Winnie Texas and tornadoes were possible in the warning area.
